Attire in Byzantine times, Educational program
Driven by the relation of Vamvakou to Mystras and thus to Byzantium, a series of three workshops has started in October in the school of Vamvakou.
On the second stop of this journey, children will get acquainted with attire in byzantine times. Via a compositional online presentation, they will find out about the outfits that the Byzantines preferred and the materials and methods used then for making fabrics, shoes and jewelry, as demonstrated through excavation findings, murals, texts and manuscript miniatures. Extensive illustrated material will reveal attire in Byzantium, raw materials, places or origin and commercial practices. The session is complemented with a hands-on activity, where children will have the chance to create and decorate a copy of a leather shoe, by referring to an exhibit from the attire collection of the Archaeological Museum of Mystras.
