Clay Play Stories | “Something Else”

School

Through the narration of Kathryn Cave’s tale “Something Else”, a story about accepting difference, we learn to see the beauty and value in what initially seems “strange” or “different”. At the same time, through the art of clay, we create our own “something else”—creatures, objects or characters that embody the idea of uniqueness and discovery. Each piece we create with clay will be unique (just like the “something else” of the tale) and has the power to be reborn, reconstructed, and take on new forms.

A multisensory natural material, clay originates directly from the earth. Clay is one of nature’s earliest materials used by men and animals and the most environmentally friendly material as it both comes from and ends up in soil. At the same time, it does bear an element of magic. As easily as one could mould clay into an object, could the latter get damaged; yet one could always start over. Every month, through play, we unfold our stories and reconcile with our mistakes aiming to connect with nature, “here and now”, and with our true self, unburdened from expectations and “shoulds”.
