The laboratory process of soap making is a simple, but highly instructive and experiential hands-on experience, closely linked to Chemistry. It is also a valuable and interesting activity for wider environmental education, on the circular economy and sustainability, with rich folklore elements. The activity aims to bring participants in contact with the traditional know-how; to encourage the proper use of up-to-date scientific knowledge in everyday life; and to raise awareness of the need to recycle and the sustainable use of materials. Participants will make soap from inedible olive oil using the cold saponification process.
