October scents walnut in Vamvakou, Lakonia

Tastes, scents, and activities focusing on Vamvakou’s nutritional treasure

October: the month when nature offers Vamvakou one of its most precious gifts – walnut! Our favorite nut, once a staple of the local production, will be this month’s source of inspiration for the most interesting gastronomic –and not only– experiences. Join us to enjoy the smells, tastes, and changes in the mountain hues participating in fun activities and events, realized as part of the Vamvakou Revival initiative, made possible thanks to an exclusive grant by the Stavros Niarchos Foundation (SNF).

Autumn experiences on Mount Parnon

October’s first Sunday (06/10) is dedicated to a flavorful walnut harvest accompanied by music. We will be hiking up to Vamvakou’s walnut grove; taking part in the harvesting process; tasting walnut recipes and enjoying DJ Dimos Kal on the decks. Music nights at Voureiko restaurant-café are back, featuring Fairouz (19/10). The band from Chania, Crete, who participated with “Schoolwave on Tour” at the Vamvakou Experience Festival 2024, return for a unique artistic event employing their fresh and youthful look at traditional, sophisticated, and folk sounds. This month’s program is further enriched with an afternoon hike to the cave monastery of Agia Kyriaki (19/10), guided by the experienced outdoor activities team “Our Vibe is… Mountains”; as well as with relaxing massage sessions (12 & 26/10) in the welcoming Vamvakou Traditional Guesthouse.

Vamvakou, walnuts, nature & environment for children and families

The month of the walnut kicks off deliciously while children make a fragrant walnut pie (05/10) working together, sharpening their skills, and learning about walnuts’ nutritional secrets. Science is going nuts at the V.Lab (Vamvakou Technology Lab fully powered by SNF) and “tough nuts” are invited to participate in an exciting treasure hunt (12/10) with nutty riddles, hidden clues, and challenges. Physics, chemistry, and biology hidden in the Vamvakou walnuts (13/10) are revealed by studying and analyzing the shape, form, and nutrients of this unique nut found in Vamvakou. The popular Clay Play Stories workshop is back and invites us to play, express ourselves through natural clay, and make an incredible walnut tree (19/10). Once again, kids’ favorite Different School transforms the village (20/10) with messy play, crafts, board games, and carefree play in the schoolyard.

This October will end sweet with herbs and honey. Join us to discover the local herbs (26/10), find out about their properties and how to use them in our daily lives; and participate in the Family Bee Day (27/10) on which parents and children will learn about the value of protecting and coexisting with bees, one of the most significant living organisms on Earth.

A nutty October awaits you in Vamvakou! Don’t miss it!
